Govt Taking Steps To Criminalise Cyberbullying

Malaysia is taking steps to officially designate cyberbullying as a crime.  

The Law and Institutional Reform Ministry says it's considering proposed amendments to the penal code to officially define cyberbullying; and make it a criminal offence.  

Its minister says this will plug any loopholes on the issue.  

She adds that authorities will also consider amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code to ensure that any future cyberbullying laws are enforced effectively.  

This, following the cyberbullying and subsequent death of local social media influencer, Esha.

Two people pleaded guilty in separate courts over Esha's case.  

A woman accepted a charge under the Minor Offences Act, and was handed the maximum penalty, of a RM100 fine.  

Meanwhile a lorry driver pleaded guilty under the Communications and Multimedia Act and will be sentenced later.

The IGP has promised a fair and transparent investigation into the murder of a 25-year-old woman.  

This, after cops confirmed the arrest of a police lance corporal to help with the probe. 

The Sarawakian victim was reported missing in Perak last week, and her remains were found in Hulu Selangor yesterday.

The Consumers Association of Penang has called for a crackdown on the sale of illegal pesticides.  

According to the NST, the group says urgent attention is needed because these pesticides are being sold openly, without proper labels or safety instructions. 

This, following the death of two young boys in Kedah, who accidentally ate poisoned snacks that were left at orchard to trap monkeys.
