law for social media kill switch to be tabled this year

The government will implement a 'kill switch' for social media platforms and messaging services as a cybersecurity measure.

De-facto law Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman says the new law to pave the way for this will be tabled in Parliament in October.

She adds that the law will help hold providers accountable in tackling online crimes such as scams, cyberbullying, and the spread of child sexual abuse materials

This comes after the government earlier introduced a new licensing requirement for all social media and messaging platforms, that will be enforced next year.
