Jan 27, 2025

taiping prison inmate's death under probe

The Prisons Dept has confirmed the death of a Taiping Prison inmate earlier this month.

According to reports, the victim was one of around a hundred detainees who were allegedly assaulted by wardens.

The Department also vowed to take tough action, if investigations find elements of negligence or procedural weaknesses among prison staff.

It also urged people NOT to share any unverified news of the incident.

Meanwhile, Perak police say they have so far questioned 80 individuals over the case, including prison officials.

The speed limit on Federal Roads will be reduced by 10kph for the next 6 days.

The Works Ministry says the temporary 80kph limit is in conjunction with the Ops Bersepadu operation for the Chinese New Year festive period.

It adds that all non-essential road works will also be suspended during this period, to ensure smooth traffic flow.

The ministry also urged all road users to be careful when driving back to their hometowns, for the sake of their passengers and other motorists.

--

Bukit Aman's traffic enforcement department sats 3,600 cops will be on duty to ensure road safety during its Ops Selamat Chinese New Year Operation.

The focus will be on the North-South and East Coast Expressways, which usually experience a major hike in traffic volume during holiday periods.

It also reminded that heavy vehicles like lorries are banned from roads during this time, and those flouting the ban will face compounds and summonses.

--

Meanwhile according to police figures, nearly 1,600 road accidents were reported nationwide yesterday, down 21% compared to Saturday.

Meanwhile 15 people died in fatal crashes yesterday.
