Ministry Strikes Down School Caning Proposal

Feb 05, 2025

ministry strikes down school caning proposal

Schools must follow strict rules when it comes to physical punishments like caning.

The Education Ministry says students can only be caned by the principal or designated teachers, and that the sanction cannot be done during assemblies.

Female students are exempt from caning.

It also told Parliament that such punishment is not aimed at causing pain, but rather to ensure that students understand the consequences of their actions.

The ministry was responding to a question from an MP, who asked if the parents or guardians of bullied students are allowed to cane their bullies.

Malaysia will soon issue its statement over a controversial proposal for America take over Gaza.

PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim adds that the country's stance on Gaza remains consistent with that of other Islamic nations.

Earlier, US president Donald Trump suggested that the US should take control of and redevelop the war-torn region, after the Palestinians there are resettled elsewhere.

The proposal was criticised by the Palestinian ambassador to Malaysia, who said that it would be no different from being occupied by Israel.

The Indonesian domestic helper who accused former Perak exco member Paul Yong of rape in 2019 has now retracted the allegation.

Her lawyer says she admitted to making up the allegation, because she wanted to return to Indonesia before her contract officially expired.
