Apr 15, 2025

state funeral for tun abdullah

The government has confirmed that a state funeral will be held for Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who passed away at the age of 85.

The former Prime Minister will be laid to rest at the Heroes Mausoleum at Masjid Negara after 1pm today.

Members of the public who wish to pay their final respects, can do so at the main hall of the national mosque from 11am.

The government adds that all buildings within 2 kilometers of Masjid Negara must fly the Jalur Gemilang at half-mast until the state funeral is completed.

This, as tributes poured in for the late former PM.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described Tun Abdullah as a leader of great integrity and kindness.

He also expressed his sorrow at the loss of a friend and former political rival.

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob described Tun Abdullah as a father figure, who first gave him the opportunity to contest the Bera parliamentary seat.

Sabri had also later served as a minister in Tun Abdullah’s Cabinet.

Elsewhere, Singapore’s PM has also extended his condolences.

Lawrence Wong says Tun Abdullah was a respected leader who helped Asean stand tall, adding that he made significant contributions to Malaysia’s social and economic development.

Wong also noted that Tun Abdullah had helped strengthen Malaysia-Singapore relations during his tenure.

Tun Abdullah Badawi served as Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister from October 2003 until April 2009.

Affectionally known as Pak Lah, he was considered the ‘nice guy’ of Malaysian politics who championed civil service reforms, moderate Islamic values, and stronger anti-corruption initiatives.
