govt mulling introduction of user id verification

The Communications Ministry is reviewing several key measures to enhance online safety through the implementation of user identity verification.

It says that these measures are important to protect children from online sexual predators.

The Ministry explained that it's because children may not know, and do not understand how to safely use social media.

This comes in the wake of a recent case where a social media influencer allegedly sent lewd pictures to a 14-year-old girl.

Police are investigating a video clip showing a primary school student allegedly being scolded and humiliated by a teacher in Kajang.

Cops add that the video was brought to their attention after it went viral online, and a report was lodged over the incident.

ASEAN has taken steps to finalize Timor-Leste's admission as a member by October.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim says the regional bloc made the decision to admit the country as the 11th member after discussions at this week’s 46th ASEAN Summit.

Separately, ASEAN has released a joint statement expressing concern over the ongoing war in Gaza, as well as the dire humanitarian situation there.
