Another Youth Group Says No To Higher Retirement Age

May 29, 2025

another youth group says no to higher retirement age

The 4B Malaysian Youth Movement says it is against the proposal to raise the retirement age to 65.

It says the move would limit employment opportunities for the younger generation amid a challenging job market.

It adds that the younger generation has an advantage in the current job market, due to their flexibility and ability to adapt to technological changes.

Meanwhile, an economist has backed a proposal to raise Malaysia's retirement age to 65.

Professor Dr Goh Lim Thye says it makes sense, given the country's declining birth rate and aging population.

"Malaysia's birthrate has fallen to just 1.6 children per women meaning fewer people will be entering the workforce for years to come while more workers are retiring. Letting older Malaysians stay in the workforce a little longer can keep public spending sustainable and tap into a valuable source of experience", he said.

He also pointed out that Malaysia has one of the lowest retirement ages in ASEAN, while countries like Vietnam and Thailand are looking raising them.

The police investigation into the death of a 7-month-old baby at a childcare centre in Danau Kota, KL is still ongoing.

Wangsa Maju police say probe covers all angles, including the possibility of negligence.

Meanwhile, the Social Welfare Department has ordered the centre to close temporarily, pending investigations.

Earlier reports said the child had died of milk aspiration.

The Public Service Department has given the Health Ministry a final deadline of August 1st to implement the 45-hour work week for nurses.

The move was supposed to happen in March, but KKM had asked for several extensions, the latest until June 1st.

Nurses are opposing the new hours, saying they are already under pressure from the current 42-hour work week.
