The Malaysian Trades Union Congress, MTUC has welcomed the government’s move to freeze recruitment of foreign workers.
Its secretary-general J. Solomon told us this would help to check Malaysia’s dependency on unskilled migrant workers
"Many of the jobs done by migrant workers, are blue collar jobs, in manufacturing, construction, plantation and services sectors. Low wages is the sticking points which discourage Malaysians from taking up sch jobs including those termed as 3D meaning dirty, dangerous and demeaning. Sadly, we have not seen any collective effort by employers to do so."
He says the announcement by the Human Resources Ministry will also open doors for a comprehensive review of the need to improve salaries and encourage Malaysians to take over jobs traditionally filled by foreigners.
