The Sri Petaling Covid-19 cluster has ended

Jul 09, 2020

The biggest Covid-19 cluster in the country has ended.

The Health Director-General confirmed that that Sri Petaling tabligh cluster has recorded zero cases, four months after the first case was reported.

Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah hailed it a victory for the local healthcare sector as a whole.

More than 3,300 individuals screened from this cluster had tested positive for the coronavirus, with 34 fatalities recorded.

Meanwhile, the Health Director-General says existing social distancing measures are sufficient to prevent the spread of Covid-19, even if the virus is airborne.

He adds that wearing a face mask, washing hands and avoiding crowded areas are some of the other things we should do to protect ourselves.

He said this after the World Health Organisation acnowledged that the coronarivus could be spead via the air.

Dr. Noor Hisham also said 70 percent of local Covid-19 infections involved asymptomatic patients.

He explained that the high number of asymptomatic cases was due to the ministry's targetted screening of high-risk groups - for example at locations placed under the enhanced MCO.

Parents need more time

The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) feels the Education Ministry did the right thing in giving parents the option of not sending their kids to school because of concerns over Covid-19.

However, it feels the Ministry needs to eventually come up with a deadline for all kids to return to school, especially when the situation is more stable.

This comes after some parents came forward, saying they're still not confident sending their kids to school amid the coronavirus outbreak.
