BN retains Slim seat

Aug 30, 2020

Barisan Nasional has retained the Slim state seat following yesterday's by-election.

Mohd Zaidi Aziz won with a nearly 11 thousand vote majority, beating two other independent candidates in the three-cornered fight.

Voter turnout was only at just over 68%, lower than the Election Commission's target of 85%.

Meanwhile, the EC says several voters had been wrongly prevented from entering one of the polling stations for wearing shorts.

The EC chairman put the incident down to a miscommunication.

All factors to be considered before increasing compounds

The Health Ministry will consider all suggestions before deciding on the proposal to increase the compound for those who violate SOP's under the Recovery MCO.

It adds that the matter will likely be brought up at the next Parliament meeting in October.

It comes after Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah recently proposed raising the fine from one thousand to ten thousand ringgit amid the emergence of several new Covid-19 clusters.

Government asked to consider random testing

The government has been asked to consider conducting random Covid-19 testing to identify asymptomatic cases.

Currently, the Health Ministry only conducts targeted screening.

However, Universiti Malaya virologist Professor Dr Sazaly Abu Bakar told The Star that until Malaysia starts to conduct more random testing, we will have to deal with new clusters popping up every now and then.

License deadline extended

The deadline for motorists to renew their expired road tax and drivers licenses has been extended by 30 days.

The Transport Minister says the exemption, which was supposed to expire this month, will now continue until September 30th.

He adds that the decision was made after taking into account the hardship and financial problems faced by the people amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
