MOF: KASTAM did not seek our approval before deciding to impost GST on another 60 food items.

Jun 20, 2017

The Finance Ministry says the Customs Department did not seek its approval before deciding to impost GST on another 60 food items.

Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani says the Cabinet's permission was not sought either.

He insists the prices of food items should not be increased in such trying financial times.

As such, Datuk Seri Johari has reminded the Customs Department to seek approval before announcing any more GST changes.

M'sians were alarmed yesterday after Customs announced that some 60 food items would be taken off the zero-rated supply list.

That meant food items such as potatoes, cucumbers and keuy tiao would be taxable under GST.

However, the customs u-turned on the decision on the same day.
