0% GST could lead to cheaper cigarettes

May 31, 2018

The National Cancer Society Malaysia is worried that setting the GST rate at 0% may lead to cheaper cigarette prices, at least temporarily.

According to its Medical Director Dr M. Muralitharan, the gap between now and when SST is implemented in September may be enough of a gateway for cheaper tobacco prices to get people hooked again onto smoking.

The National Cancer Society and other related bodies are now trying to push the government to raise the excise duty for tobacco, to compensate for the lower prices.
