News Wrap-up: YB LGE: SST will costs Malaysians less than GST, Datuk Seri Najib's bank account no longer frozen.

Jul 18, 2018

SST will costs Malaysians less than GST

The SST will cost Malaysians 23 billion ringgit less than the GST.

As such, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng says former PM Datuk Seri Najib Razak's claims that the SST will be more of a burden on the rakyat is illogical.

Meanwhile, Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Ong Kian Ming, says the Sales and Services Tax of 10 percent and 6 percent respectively, should not be added up, as they are applicable to separate items, on different levels.

He adds, there are a lot of items affected by GST, but are exempted under the SST system.

Other than DS Najib, Khairy Jamaluddin is also not supportive of the tax, saying the Pakatan govt could have lowered the GST rate to gain more revenue.

He also once again defended himself against allegations of not being a team player, for refusing to walk out over the Speaker's appointment on the first day of Parliament.

"Yes, I'm sorry for not following consensus," he said.

"However, I feel we should respect each other's diverse opinions."

"I'm not the only one, Datuk Anifah (Aman) also did not leave the hall."

He adds, "We need to make a decision based on what we feel is right."

It's no longer frozen

Datuk Seri Najib's bank account is no longer frozen after the MACC found it had no relation to the 1MDB scandal.

The Anti-Corruption Commission told the NST, bank accounts owned by his children have also been unfrozen.

Hotel owner's move slammed as outrageous
The owner of the Las Vegas hotel where a mass shooting killed 58 people last year, is suing the victims in a move that has been slammed as outrageous.

It filed a lawsuit against more than 1,000 people who were shot at.

It's not suing for money, but wants the courts to agree it's not responsible for any deaths, injuries or damages in the attack.
