Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said doing away with the law will provide more chances for provocations of race and religion on social media.

The PM had earlier pledged to abolish SOSMA, alleging it enabled the government to arrest anyone without having to go to court, and escape punishment if the person dies in custody.

Meanwhile, social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has also urged the government to talk to the police and other stakeholders before deciding to do away with SOSMA.

He's concerned the move will result in a spike in crime and terrorism activities.

Tan Sri Lee says after the ISA was repealed in 2012 and several detainees were released, there was a significant spike in crime rate.

Selangor, Johor Lead In Sexual Crime Cases

More than 50,000 cases of rape, incest, molestation and similar crimes were recorded in Malaysia between 2013 and this May.

Over 3,000 of them happened in the first 5 months of this year alone.

Government data showed most of the victims were women, children and teenagers below 18.

Selangor, Johor and Kedah were among the states with the highest number of cases, including sexual harassment and domestic violence.

This comes amid a spate of babies dying under the care of child-minders.

The latest tragedy saw a 4-month old baby choke on his milk while at a nursery in Melaka.

Review For Economic Policies

The New Economic Policy, NEP will be reviewed.

The Economic Affairs Ministry says the NEP, and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's brainchild - the New Economic Model - will both be re-examined to determine whether they're still relevant.

This comes as the government has started work on the 12th Malaysia Plan.
