News Wrap-up: More Organ Donors Needed, Extension To Update PTPTN Details

Jul 26, 2018

More Organ Donors Needed

There are about 21,000 people in Malaysia waiting for an organ transplant, and 99% of them need a kidney.

Research has shown getting a new kidney is cheaper and better for quality of life compared to dialysis, but only 1.3% of Malaysians are registered organ donors.

The number of organ donations after death is also stagnant and the Health Ministry told The Star, one of the reasons is refusal by family members.

As such, it says Malaysians are not ready for the opt-out system, whereby everyone is deemed an organ donor unless they say no.

The original deadline was yesterday, but PTPTN has given borrowers a 6-day extension.

The update is required for all borrowers, as the govt tries to push through a plan to defer loan repayments for those earning less than RM4,000 per month.
