The govt is setting up 2 new committees to look at fiscal issues and the country's tax system.

The govt is setting up 2 new committees to look at fiscal issues and the country's tax system.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng says the Public Finance Committee and the Tax Reform Committee, will look at medium-term fiscal plans and assess the taxation system to make it more efficient and progressive.

He says he will head the PFC and will be joined by the Economic Affairs Minister and the Bank Negara Governor.

However, he did not say who would chair the TRC committee.

Meanwhile, the finance ministry has also set up a website where the public can contribute ideas and suggestions for Budget 2019.

This, comes after several detainees launched a hunger strike at the Sungai Buloh and Penang prisons, urging the govt to repeal the controversial law. 

However, it says the process will take time and has to be done on a case-to-case basis.

It adds, this will NOT apply to any Sosma detainees under investigation for terrorism-related activities.
