News Wrap-up: Minister clarifies khalwat report, still no salary hike for civil servants

Oct 08, 2018

Minister Clarifies Inaccurate Newspaper Report

The Press Secretary for the de-facto Religion Minister has warned that action will be taken against an English daily, if it does not apologise for a report about the minister by today.

The article had claimed Datuk Dr Mujahid Yusuf Rawa is against Khalwat raids, but he later told Astro Awani that is not true.

Mujahid had been slammed by several parties after the article was published on Saturday, but he says he has no hard feelings.

He did, however concede there is a need to improve Khalwat enforcement tactics, amid reports of abuse of power by some officers.

Ministers Allowed To Campaign

The Election Commission has clarified that ministers are allowed to campaign for political candidates, but only after working hours.

They're also not allowed to use government assets or facilities in campaigning.

This comes as several Pakatan ministers are campaigning for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who's contesting in this Saturday's Port Dickson by-election.

Rogue Lorry Driver Has Unpaid Summonses

The man seen in a viral video driving a lorry against the flow of traffic along the North South Expressway yesterday does not have a driving licence.

Police say the man had more than 60 unpaid summonses and about 40 arrest warrants against him.

He drove against traffic for about 3km towards Ipoh before crashing into another lorry, but no one was injured.

Still No Civil Service Salary Hike

There will be no wage increase for civil servants at the moment, regardless of what the previous BN government had promised.

Chief Secretary to the Govt Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Bakar said the government will need one or two years to study the country's financial situation, before deciding whether it can afford a salary hike.
