Authorities call for a curfew to be imposed to prevent kids from loitering at night

Feb 19, 2017

The Home Ministry has called for a curfew to be imposed, to prevent kids and teenagers from loitering around major roads at night.

This, following the death of 8 teenage cyclists, who were rammed by a car at about 3 in the morning near Johor Bahru.

The Ministry says the police have been taking action over the past 10 years, on a softer and advisory manner, but now its time to get tough.

It has also pointed out that the car driver involved had complied with the traffic laws, and that the cyclists were apparently racing.

This, as the police have denied claims that the woman was using her mobile phone while driving.

The cops say they've carried out investigations, and there's no truth in the allegations, but urged the survivors of the incident to come forward if they did see the driver on her phone.

Meanwhile, the Transport Ministry has also called for strict enforcement to be put in place to prevent another such tragedy.

It says the teenagers should not have been cycling on that road, especially at 3 in the morning.

The Johor Education Department is also looking into joyriding cycling groups, as the victims are believed to be part of such a group.
