Malaysia bans North Koreans from leaving the country

Mar 07, 2017

Malaysia has banned North Korean embassy staff and officers from leaving the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister says this is in response to Pyongyang's earlier move to temporarily ban all Malaysians from leaving North Korea, amid the escalating row over the recent klia2 murder.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says Malaysia had not planned to retaliate against North Korea, but the move was necessary considering it had carried out a move that was against the norms of diplomatic relations.

Reports say there are currently 11 Malaysians officially in North Korea, including 3 embassy staff.

Wisma Putra says the 11 are now stranded at the Pyongyang airport, although they are doing well.
