Malaysia's literacy rate currently at just under 95%

May 05, 2017

Malaysia's literacy rate is currently at just under 95%.

The director-general of the National Library says this is based on the 1985 to 2015 Adult and Youth Literacy report by the UNESCO Institute for Statistics.

She adds that the standard of measurement set by the Institute is high, clarifying recent reports that Malaysia's literacy rate was only at 55%.

Nevertheless, the director general says our reading habits can still be improved on, because Malaysians read only 15 books a year, on average.
