The risk of Malaysia being affected, following yesterday's quake in Aceh is very low

Dec 08, 2016

The risk of Peninsular Malaysia being affected, following yesterday's earthquake in Aceh, Indonesia is very low.

The Met Department says other than  weak tremors felt in the north of the Peninsular, there has been no major impact to our country.

Meanwhile, rescue workers, soldiers and police are combing through the rubble for a 2nd day, to look for earthquake survivors.

Aceh authorities have declared a 14-day state of emergency in the district of Pidiejaya, to facilitate the rescue work.

This, as the death toll has risen above 100, while at least one person is missing and another 130 people are seriously injured.

Officials say the death toll is expected to increase, as the search efforts have yet to completely cover the affected area.
