Malaysians lacking awareness about disabled kids

Oct 16, 2017

There appears to be a lack of awareness among Malaysians about disabled kids.

A UNICEF study has found that six in 10 respondents felt they didnt have enough information about children with disabilities.

The study also showed that 87% of them want more information on the matter.

UNICEF's chief of communications Laurent Duvillier says this lack of information can actually make things worse:

"This study shows that people across Malaysia want to know more but are actually mis-informed about children with disability. And the implication is very important, because if you dont have enough knowledge or incorrect information about disability, what we tend to do is 'disable' children with disabilities..causing more stigma and discrimination"
