Cabinet agrees to amend mandatory death sentence

Aug 07, 2017

The Cabinet has agreed on amending the mandatory death sentence for drug traffickers.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman says the Cabinet decided that judges should have the right to decide on more appropriate sentences for offenders, including jail terms.

She also pointed out that there could bave been cases in the past, where a judge was forced to pass the death sentence on a drug trafficker, because there were no other sentences available.

A memo will soon be handed over to the Cabinet, for the necessary amendment to the Dangerous Drugs Act.
