News Wrap-up: ECRL Not Cancelled, IRB Confirms Refunds Not Paid

Aug 25, 2018

"ECRL Not Cancelled"

The ECRL and other China projects in Malaysia are not cancelled.

PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad clarified the projects are still being studied, to see whether they should be dropped or deferred.

He says the study will also include finding other ways to cary out these projects without costing too much money.

IRB Confirms RM16bil Not Refunded

The IRB has confirmed the Finance Minister's claims that 16 billion ringgit of excess income tax and real property gains tax have not been refunded to taxpayers.

It says the previous government was informed of the shortfall in the tax fund, that resulted in the delay in refunding excess taxes paid for up to six years.

It adds it will extend its full cooperation to the special police team that has been formed to investigate the issue.

"No High Charges For Cancer Patients"

The Health Ministry has dismissed claims that cancer patients have to pay RM400 for cancer drugs alone when seeking treatment at government hospitals.

It says the charge is for the total treatment provided to the patients and not just the medication alone.

It adds the charge is imposed only once in every four weeks.

This, after a newspaper reported that cancer patients referred from private to public hospitals were paying more for cancer treatment and drugs.

Another Babysitter Arrested

Police have arrested a babysitter in Seremban, to assist investigation into an incident where a 4-month-old baby boy under her care was found unconscious.

The 23-year-old was detained after internal injuries were found on the infant.

The baby is currently in critical condition in hospital.
