The Transport Ministry is concerned about the working conditions for lorry drivers.

This, as drivers may be taking illegal substances to stay on the road longer, to maximise profits at the expense of getting enough rest.

It was commenting after a trailer lost control and rammed into a car near the Menora Tunnel in Ipoh, killing five people.

The trailer's driver allegedly tested positive for amphetamines, a drug that helps people stay awake longer.

Separately, the Transport Minister is proposing tougher penalties for people who cause fatal accidents due to reckless driving.

This includes the possibility of banning such drivers for life.

Currently under the Road Transport Act, causing death by reckless driving is punishable by jail time, a fine, and a driving ban of up to 10 years.

Meanwhile , the Ministry has suspended the trailer company's permit, pending an audit on the company.

It has also ordered MIROS conduct a detailed study on the Menora Tunnel, to look at how to reduce the number of accidents in the area.

This may include diverting heavy vehicles to alternative roads.
