News Wrap-up: Unity Government? Keep dreaming...

Unity Government? Keep dreaming...

UMNO's plan to form a Unity Government and return to power before GE15 seems to have hit a roadblock, after its rumoured targets denied any wish to work with the opposition party.

PKR-president elect, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shot down any suggestions of a unity government with UMNO, saying his party is committed to Pakatan Harapan and that there's no need to discuss anything beyond that.

BERSATU president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is on the same page.

"The fact is Pakatan Harapan has won. UMNO has lost. I don't know if they have made gestures to other Pakatan leaders, but as far as BERSATU goes, I don't think it's susceptible", he said.

DAP has also rejected any cooperation with UMNO.

Sarawak Report author under fire from Terengganu Royal House

Less than a month after it was launched, the book "The Sarawak Report: The Inside Story of the 1MDB Exposé" is already in trouble.

The Sultanah of Terengganu is suing the book's author, Clare Rewcastle-Brown for defamation.

Sarawak Report has apologised and clarified it did not suggest the Sultanah was conspiring with Jho Low, nor that she's involved in the 1MDB scandal.

It explained reprints of the book took out an important reference about Jho Low's friendship with the Terengganu royal family, which may have caused the misintepretation.

Register or face closure, Khalid warns KL tahfiz centres

The Federal Territories Minister is surprised some quarters are objecting to the closure of tahfiz schools which are operating in unsafe buildings and unhealthy environments.

This comes as Khalid Abdul Samad warned DBKL has the power to shut down any tahfiz centres that still refuse to register themselves.

The registration movement comes after a tahfiz principal was accused of sodomising nine students.

Five more areas in Sarawak declared rabies-infected

The rabies outbreak in Sarawak is not over, as another five areas have been declared rabies-infected, bringing the total to 41 so far.

The Sarawak Vet Association says the relevant authorities have actively gone down to the ground to take steps to curb the disease, through vaccinations and culling.

However, President Dr Chuo Hock Tieng says there's still a way to go for Malaysia to regain its rabies-free status.

"I think we are far from having zero rabies cases as there must be a very active involvement involving the armed forces patrolling our borders, as well as police personnel to curb our animal movement in and out of the rabies outbreak area," he said.

He spoke to us in conjunction with World Rabies Day today.
