News Wrap-up: Shellfish becomes the first item off the SST!

Sep 04, 2018

First item off the SST: Shellfish!

We're just four days into the SST and Finance Minister, Lim Guan Eng has announced that one item has already been exempted.

Molluscs and crustaceans have been exempted from the SST, because he had mistaken them for luxury items.

Before this, molluscs and crustaceans were subject to a 10% SST.

Guan Eng also said each state will be getting their own SST officer, who will clarify the Sales and Service Tax to the stakeholders.

It is pushing the Attorney-General's Chambers to give the public an explanation, to ensure transparency.

The MACC had also earlier expressed shock that the charges were dropped, saying the decision was from the AG's Chambers.

The Prime Minister said the ventures and projects undertaken by BN was not generating enough profit to service the loans it had taken.

However, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad didn't say which assets would be sold.

No need for public to witness caning

The de-facto Religion Minister, Datuk Dr. Mujahid Yusof Rawa says public presence during the caning of a Syriah offender must be reconsidered.

This comes after two women in Terengganu were caned in public for lesbian relations yesterday.

Dr Mujahid believes it's sufficient for officials to be present.
