News Wrap-up: Sungai Kandis by-election, SST-exempted items not finalised

Jul 20, 2018

The Sungai Kandis by-election will likely be a two-way fight between UMNO and PKR.

UMNO has announced Datuk Lokman Noor Adam as its candidate for the Selangor state constituency.

Lokman is the leader of the group Pemantau Malaysia Baru, which has been highly criticial of the Pakatan Harapan Government.

It made headlines earlier this week, for organising a march to Parliament, to protest against alleged attempts to undermine the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the position of Islam and bumiputra rights.

Lokman will go up against Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, the secretary of PKR's Religious Understanding and Consolidation Bureau.

Nomination day is tomorrow, while polling day falls on August 4th.

MOF: SST-exempted items not finalised just yet

The government has not finalised the list of items that will be exempted from SST.

The Finance Ministry said this, after the Customs Department released a list of proposed items yesterday.

Its minister, Lim Guan Eng says the list may be revised, with items added or removed, depending on public feedback.

The Customs Department's list included several 'big-ticket' items including airplanes, helicopters, spacecraft such as satellites, and yachts were listed.

However, Lim says the Ministry may decide to make them taxable under SST.

MOH: No Selangor schools closed by HFMD

The Health Ministry says no schools in Selangor have been ordered to close, due to hand foot and mouth disease.

This, after a viral message claimed that 51 schools there had to be shut down due to the outbreak.

It says only two HFMD clusters have been reported at two schools in Selangor, but neither were ordered to close.
