News Wrap-up: Childcare laws to be tightened, Black shoes in schools to be carried out in stages

Jul 22, 2018

Wan Azizah promises to strengthen childcare laws

Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail has pledged to tighten laws, in a bid to stop future incidents of babies dying in their nanny's care.

She says the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has held discussions with the Attorney-General's Chambers, on the matter.

This, following the case of 10-month-old Naufal Amsyar, who died after falling from a crib at his babysitter's home in Tangkak, Johor.

Maszlee Malik: Black shoes ruling to be done in stages

All government schools will have up to year to implement the black shoes ruling.

Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik says this grace period is to allow people to adapt to the new ruling, including parents who might be burdened by the new policy.

During that period, he says no disciplinary action will be taken against students for not wearing black shoes to school.

Melaka's HFMD cases up almost 50% from last year

Melaka has recorded over 1,400 hand, foot and mouth disease cases since January - an almost 50% increase from the same period last year.

However, its Health Committee chairman assures the outbreak is still under control.

Only a few schools and child centres have been ordered to close.
