PKR has retained the Sungai Kandis state seat in the constituency's by-election.

Zawawi Ahmad Mughni defeated his opponent, Datuk Lokman Noor Adam of Barisan Nasional by a reduced majority of nearly 5,000 votes.

Meanwhile, independent candidate K. Murthy only received 97 votes.

The Sungai Kandis by-election was the first by-election to be held after GE14, following the death of assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei of PKR last month.

EC urges Bersih to lodge formal complaint, before probing Najib's Facebook post

Bersih 2.0 has accused former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak of violating election laws in Sungai Kandis. 

Najib made a Facebook post on polling day yesterday, urging constituents to vote for Barisan Nasional.

Bersih says this amounts to campaigning on polling day, which is illegal under the Election Offences Act. 

The Election Commission has urged Bersih to lodge a report, so that it can investigate.

Malaysian Bar urges government to establish IPCMC ASAP

The Malaysian Bar has called on the government to establish the Independent Police Complaint and Misconduct Commission without further delay.

This, in line with Pakatan Harapan's manifesto, that the commission would be set up in the first term of its administration.

The IPCMC is a police oversight body first proposed by the Royal Commission of Inquiry, to improve the police force in 2005.

It will function as an independent organisation to investigate complaints about PDRM personnel.

Tun M doubles taxable goods purchase limit for Langkawi tourists

Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has increased the purchase limit of taxable goods for tourists in Langkawi.

Tun Dr Mahathir, who is also Langkawi MP, says the move would bring in more tourists to the island.

However, he adds that the limit doesn't include items such as liquor and cigarettes, which are harmful to health.

Tun Dr Mahathir also assures that Langkawi will retain its duty-free status.

Perak to implement healthcare and food cards for state's underprivileged

The Perak government is working on a healthcare and food card system for the underprivileged in the state.

Perak's Menteri Besar, Ahmad Faizal Azumu says the cards would work like debit cards, which are able to buy groceries and daily necessities.

The cards can also be used to pay for medical treatment in private clinics.

The move is to fulfill one of the promises made by Perak Pakatan Harapan in its manifesto.
