News Wrap-up: The latest on MH370, Altantuya and the Lombok earthquake

Jul 30, 2018

MH370 report offers no new findings

The lead investigator of the MH370 case says they are unable to determine the real cause for the disappearance of the plane back in 2014.

They investigated everyone on board including the pilot and cabin crew, but nothing suspicious was found.

He adds the plane's turn back was likely made while the aircraft was under manual control, not autopilot, but declined to confirm if a third party was involved.

Meanwhile, Kok Soo Chon also adds that the two passengers onboard the flight, who were found not to be travelling on false passports, have been proved to be innocent.

Flight MH370, carrying 239 people, disappeared on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing on March 8th, 2014.

Malaysia to aid Indonesia's Lombok Island, if necessary

The Defence Ministry is prepared to deploy assets to Indonesia's quake-hit island of Lombok if necessary.

Its minister, Mohamad Sabu says he will have to first discuss the matter with the Armed Forces Chief.

Meanwhile, more than 500 climbers including 21 from Malaysia are reportedly still stranded on the volcanic Mount Rinjani in Lombok.

Indonesian authorities say rescue teams have been deployed to evacuate all the climbers from the mountain area.

The evacuation process is experiencing some difficulties due to landslides on the main road to the mountain.

Separately, the remains of Malaysian climber, Siti Nur Ismawida Ismail, who was killed in the quake, will be repatriated home tomorrow.

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck Lombok yesterday, killing 14 people, injuring 162, and damaging thousands of houses.

What is Australia's view on Sirul Azhar's position? That is the question...

The Prime Minister will seek Australia’s stance on convicted murderer Sirul Azhar when he meets with the Australian Foreign Minister this week over the murder of Altantuya Shariibuu.

He says he wants to know Australia’s position on Sirul, who has been in an Australian detention centre for the past three years.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad clarified that he will not be specifically asking for Sirul to be brought back to Malaysia.

The former police commando is facing a death penalty here.

MOH to investigate alleged sexual abuse in Klang Valley hospital
