Malaysia convicts first person under fake news law

Apr 30, 2018

A Yemeni man has become the first person to be sentenced under the new Anti-Fake News law.

The man, who holds a Danish passport, had accused police of arriving late to the scene of the murder of Palestinian lecturer, Dr. Fadi al-Batsh in Kuala Lumpur.

He was sentenced to a week's jail and fined 10 thousand ringgit.

This is compared to the maximum penalty of six years jail, and a half a million ringgit fine.
