First wave of MPs' assets published

Nov 01, 2018

The MACC has published the information of some 40 Pakatan Harapan MPs, who submitted their income declarations to the anti-graft commission.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng tops the list with a total income of RM86,000.

However, it's unclear if this is a monthly or yearly income, or if it combines his pay with that of his wife and children, whose assets he also declared.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is third on the list, with assets of RM75,000.

This is the first time in Malaysia’s history that the assets of MPs or Ministers have been made public.

Taxi drivers should embrace e-hailing technology, instead of saying it should be banned.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke says this way, they can supplement their income by taking online bookings as well as picking up passengers the traditional way.

He adds, that the government has already taken several measures to improve cabbies' earnings, such as by limiting the commission they have to pay e-hailing companies.

Loke noted that 10,000 taxi drivers have already signed up on the e-hailing platform.

Separately, more than 56,000 traffic summonses have been issued through the Automated Awareness Safety System, since the JPJ took over operations in September.

The Transport Ministry says about 95 per cent were speed-related offences, while the rest were for jumping red lights.

He warned those issued AWAS summonses to settle their fines immediately, or risk being blacklisted in the JPJ system.

Jho Low's whereabouts to be kept on the low

The Deputy Home Minister says any latest info on fugitive billionaire Jho Low's whereabouts should be kept only within investigators.

He says this is to prevent Low from evading arrest.

Earlier, Jho Low reportedly contacted the Council of Eminent Persons, with an offer to turn himself in.

CEP chief, Tun Daim Zainuddin says the fugitive had offered to help authorities find 1MDB assets, in exchange for immunity from prosecution.

Road to RM1,500 minimum wage

The government is confident that it will be able to implement the RM1,500 minimum wage within five years.

The Deputy Human Resource Minister didn't rule out the possibility that the minimum wage will be reviewed annually, instead of every two years currently.

He stressed that minimum wage needs to be raised gradually, so that it will not overly burden employers, especially small-and medium businesses.
