More by-election action!

Nov 16, 2018

Rafizi Ramli has ruled out contesting in the upcoming Rantau by-election in Negeri Sembilan.

According to the Malay Mail, the former Pandan MP says he has no immediate plan to return to public office.

Instead, he says the nomination should go to fellow PKR member Dr S Streram, who was controversially prevented from running for the seat in GE14.

This, after the Election Court nullified the outcome of the Rantau seat in GE14 and ordered a by-election to be held.

UMNO Deputy President Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan had won the seat uncontested, after Dr Streram was blocked from filing his nomination papers.

Meanwhile, the anaesthetist told Malaysiakini that he hopes to be named as Pakatan Harapan's candidate.

Mohamad Hasan has also confirmed that he will contest under the Basrisan Nasional ticket.

The court hasn't declared the seat vacant just yet, as incumbent Mohamad Hasan has two weeks to appeal against the court's ruling.

The government will hold a series of public engagements next year, on whether to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

The Prime Minister's Department says the government will use any feedback from the consultations to form its decision.

Several groups are against the government signing the convention, claiming it would affect he special rights of Bumiputeras, and may undermine the positions of the Malay language and Islam.

Meanwhile, outgoing PKR Youth Chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad says he has no issues with Malaysia signing the ICERD, so long as the Federal Constitution is preserved.

The ICERD commits all signatories to eliminate racial discrimination and to promote understanding among all races.
