The Education Minister wants to turn Malaysia into a reading nation by the year 2030.

Dr Maszlee Malik says efforts to encourage more people to read over the years have not been succesful, adding that a more robust and aggressive approach is needed. 

He adds that Malaysia was ranked 53rd in the 2016 Most Literate Nation study...leaving us far behind our neighbour Singapore in 36th place.

Police have been alerted to a new trend where cybercriminals are now extorting their victims for payment in bitcoin, to avoid detection by the authorities.

PDRM says these syndicates work by sending random emails to individuals, threatening to harm them, or leak sensitive information about the victims if they do not pay up.

The cops are advising the public to use strong passwords, to scan your devices regularly, and not to transfer any funds if you receive such emails, to avoid falling victim again in the future.

And, the number of flood evacuees in Terengganu has spiked to over 1,600 overnight, with the districts of Hulu Terengganu, Kemaman and Setiu affected. 

There's also been an increase in Pahang, where some 400 people are now seeking shelter at relief centres. 

As of early this morning, Selangor has 99 evacuees, Perak has 50, while 17 victims have been displaced in Melaka.
