UMNO's fraction in Parliament shrinks further

Another six UMNO MPs have quit the party.

They are Hulu Terengganu MP Datuk Rosol Wahid, Mersing MP Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad, Tasik Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahaya, Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, Sabak Bernam MP Datuk Mohamad Fasiah Mohd Fakeh, and Tanah Merah MP Datuk Seri Ikmal Hisham Abdul Aziz.

According to the NST, they submitted their resignation letters to the UMNO Secretary-General today.

Their departure will leave UMNO with just 38 seats in Parliament, from the 54 they won in GE14.

In response to these defections, former UMNO Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin has called for an immediate election to replace the party's leadership.

Khairy also urged the party's Youth and Wanita wings to demand Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's resignation as President.

Separately, Amanah has yet to decide if it will accept any former UMNO lawmakers who want to join the party.

Its President, Mohamad Sabu says he needs to discuss the issue with the Amanah leadership, as well as with other members of Pakatan Harapan.

A number of UMNO MPs have already joined fellow Pakatan member Bersatu, including Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, and Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.
