Ambiga to PH: Don't stray from reform agenda

Dec 21, 2018

Pakatan Harapan faces the risk of being crippled if it loses its way in the reform agenda.

The ruling coalition's second biggest party with 42 MP seats - DAP - says it won't hesitate to walk away if Pakatan abandons the objective of New Malaysia.

There's no evidence of Pakatan straying at the moment.

In fact, just yesterday the Senate passed a bill to amend the Universities and Colleges Act to give students the right to participate in political activities on campus.

But it's Pakatan's attitude towards the more controversial laws that's worrying social activist Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

"They have taken away the moratorium on sedition act, they've taken it away on so many of the other oppresive legislation, why? For me, on the reform front, a few good ones because they have appointed good people. But on actually getting down to amending legislation that must be amended or repealed, very disappointing so far."

The prominant lawyer also told us she's sure Malaysians won't sit still if the govt turns away from the reform agenda.

"We have fought too hard and long for the changes that came on the 9th of May. It took many many many years you know? To expect us to give up the reform agenda, to give up the ideals of a new Malaysia, well I don't think we're going to give up so easily"

However, Ambiga said, despite our young government's shortfalls at the moment, she is sure we'll be seeing great things in the future...

"I just hold this govt to a higher standard because they are capable to holding that higher stadard. Even if they cannot fulfill in their manifesto they should come out to say it. I what we can fulfill, this is what we cannot, why we cannot, I think they owe it to the people to do that."

Stay tuned for our full interview with Ambiga, out next week on the Astro Radio Facebook page.
