Report: Sirul Azhar Umar denied political asylum in Australia

Feb 20, 2019

Sirul Azhar Umar is one step closer to returning to Malaysia.

The former police commando fled to Australia and requested political asylum, after he was sentenced to death for the murder of Altantuya Shaaribu.

But now, an Australian tribunal has dismissed his bid, saying his conviction was not political in nature.

However, he won't be extradited immediately.

Australian law still prevents him from being sent back until we abolish the death penalty.

Those efforts are underway, with the government expected to table a law to repeal capital punishment by next month's Parliamentary session at the earliest.
