Sirul Azhar Umar lodges appeal over failed asylum bid

Feb 21, 2019

Sirul Azhar Umar says he was ordered to kill Altantuya Shariibuu because she was allegedly a "Russian spy".

However, the former police commando claimed to an Australian court that he refused to carry out the order.

Sirul said this while appealing an Australian court's decision, which rejected his bid for political asylum.

The tribal ruled yesterday, that Sirul's murder conviction in Msia was not politically-motivated.

Sirul, and partner Azilah Hadri were convicted of murdering the Mongolian model.

After a lengthy appeals process, the Federal Court reinstated their conviction and sentenced them to death.

However, Sirul fled to Australia where he claimed political asylum.
