Johor chemical waste dump case worsens

Mar 14, 2019

All schools and kindergartens in Pasir Gudang, Johor have been shut down because of a chemical waste dump.

However, the state Menteri Besar says the worst in over, although nine people remain in the ICU.

No state of emergency will be declared.

Datuk Osman Sapian said the toxic fumes mainly affected schools, and not residential areas.

He believes it's because of the open nature of schools, that allowed the hazardous fumes to enter the building through the wind.

Heat can also trigger the fumes.

Meanwhile, the Bomba chief has admitted that the issue did not have to become so serious, if the toxic waste officers found on the first sweep was taken care of.

Datuk Mohammad Hamdan Wahid said discarding toxic waste is not Bomba's job, but he felt leaving it there was the wrong move.

Meanwhile, SPM results are out today.

Students in the affected Pasir Gudang area can get their results at the District Education Office, text in or check online.
