No record of Malaysia importing pineapples allegedly containing cyclamic acid

Image: Strait Times

Malaysia does not import a Thai brand of frozen peeled baby pineapples, which are said to contain the sweetening agent cyclamic acid.

The Health Ministry said this, in response to a viral message about the frozen pineapples.

The Ministry also assured that it will continue to monitor the safety of imported pineapples.

Cyclamic acid is a sweetening agent that is 30 to 50 times sweeter then regular table sugar, and our food regulations ban its use in fresh fruits.

According to reports, long-term consumption could result in kidney failure, liver disease, and could also affect male fertility and promote cancerous cell growth.
