Pasir Gudang schools reopen

All schools and higher learning institutions in Pasir Gudang reopened today, after they were shut down due to the chemical pollution in the area.

The Johor state govt says a team of officers were deployed to affected schools, to give safety briefings during morning assembly.

Meanwhile, the state Education Dept says the schools don't have to hold replacement classes. 

It's because teachers were given various alternative teaching materials during the closure.

The Chemistry Department’s full analysis of the pollution in Sungai Semenyih will be completed in a week's time. 

The Selangor state govt also says that legal action will be taken against palm oil processing plant, believed to be the source of the pollution, IF it's found that it had breached the law. 

The state environmental exco also said he hopes that authorities will relocate the factory, as it is just 500 metres away from the river.

The pollution had caused the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant to be shut down for several days, leaving some 377 thousand consumers in Petaling, Hulu Langat, Kuala Langat and Sepang without water.

PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says the govt has not made any decision on bringing in workers from Africa.

The HR Ministry earlier said that the workers could be recruited to work in the plantation sector. 

It said the sector is finding it hard to hire workers Vietnam and Indonesia because the salaries offered here are no longer deemed attractive.
