You might wanna slow down on the soft drinks...

The sugar tax starts today!

It will will see a surcharge imposed on soft drinks and select fruit and vegetable juices. 

Customs says businesses will be given a two-month transition period to ease into it. 

Selangor's plastic straw ban also starts today. 

It doesn't mean you can't get a straw if you really need it, but you'll have to ask. 

The NST reported some places are planning to charge for the straws, with the money going to charity.

We won't be bringing in African workers

The suggestion to bring Africans in to work in the plantation sector has been scrapped!

The Human Resources Minister said it was only a suggestion and has not been taken to cabinet, but the plans have been cancelled since the PM said it's unnesscesary.

M. Kulasegaran initially made the suggestion, after industry players complained that workers from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia and Vietnam don't want to work in oil palm estates any longer, because of low wages.

Pasir Gudang schools to remain open

All schools in Pasir Gudang, Johor will remain open today, despite about 130 students and teachers falling ill again right after classes were reopened yesterday. 

State exco member Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar said the air quality readings are normal, if a little unstable yesterday.

Students will be moved to lower floor classrooms today, as most of those who experienced symptoms yesterday are from higher floors.
