PM suggests lighter approach on Indonesia over haze issue
Sep 26, 2019
The Prime Minister has turned down suggestions of an economic sanction on Indonesia for the transboundary haze.
"We should try persuasion. I think the Indonesians are suffering very much."
Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was responding to a question at the World Leaders Forum on whether stricter action has to be taken against our neighbour.
Tun M adds, unless Indonesia is willing to accept Malaysia's help to put out its forest fires, there's nothing we can do.
"You can blame Indonesia, you can criticise them, say nasty things about them, but if they continue to have their fires, you will still have the haze. The system doesn't allow us to interfere in the internal affairs of countries."
Tun M is currently at the UN General Assembly in New York City.
