There's been a U-turn on new fees for conventional banking

Banks have decided not to slap any charges for cheque and cash payments over the counter or at Cash Deposit Machines,
This comes a day after the Assiociation of Banks in Malaysia defended the charges, saying they were necessary to encourage consumers to switch to online banking.
It says certain customer are already waived from these charges, for example disabled persons and senior citizens.
Consumers groups had criticised the charges, saying they were unfair.
Baby elephant found dead in Tawau river

The Sabah Wildlife Department is investigating viral photos and videos showing a tied-up dead elephant calf in a riverbank in the district of Tawau.
According to the Star, the baby elephant was discovered by fishermen in their boats.
It had a large hole in its back, presumably from a gunshot.

Only 40 percent of Indonesia forest fire hotspots are remaining following heavy rain in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan.
Meanwhile, local authorities have arrested over 300 individuals believed to behind the fires that triggered the recent transboundary haze.
Earlier, some 100 students in Jambi and Riau returned to Malaysia yesterday, after a state of emergency was declared in Riau due to the haze.
Back home, air quality across the country has returned to normal, with all areas nationwide posting good to moderate API readings.
