Tougher penalties needed for drink-driving offences

Oct 28, 2019

A Penang state lawmaker has urged the federal govt to raise the penalties for drunk driving.

She says currently, causing death by drunk driving is only punishable by a minimum of 3 years jail and an 8 thousand ringgit fine, which is NOT an effective deterrent.

She also wants owners of business premises that serve alcohol, to do more to warn patrons about the dangers of drunk driving.

Her comments came after a city municipal worker was struck and killed by a Chinese national, who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

Environmental groups have called for a complete ban on single-use plastic bags, instead of imposing a 20 sen charge.

They told The Star, that the govt should follow the lead of other contries, who are taking more concrete steps to save the environment.

This is after the DPM said that the 20 sen charge for single-use plastic bags will be extended to ALL business premises nationwide, starting in 2022.

Police have wrapped up their probe into the 12 individuals, for their alleged links to the LLTE group.

Bukit Aman's counter-terrorism chief says they are now waiting for a decision by the Attorney-General's chambers, on whether they should be detained further, or released.

The 12, including two state assemblymen, are being detained under SOSMA.
