Will our draconian laws finally be amended?

Malaysia's draconian laws may finally be amended, a year after Pakatan Harapan made the election pledge. 

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the decision to press ahead with the amendments were made after a closed-door meeting:

"We have made these promises before, but we were delayed because of certain factors. We now feel we should take action immediately, in case they are made use again."

The provision to allow detention without trial within SOSMA will also be looked into. 

However, he refused to reply when asked whether the decision to amend the laws is connected to the recent arrests of 12 terror suspects under SOSMA.

On that case, the KL High Court has dismissed applications filed by five men, to be released immediately from detention. 

They were nabbed last month under SOSMA for alleged links to the LTTE terror group. 

They have been in detention along with seven others for almost a month now.

Suspicious deposits recorded since cash threshold rate lowered

Over five million suspicious cash deposits have been reported to Bank Negara since September. 

That's since Bank Negara lowered the daily Cash Threshold Report from RM50,000 to RM25,000. 

This means banks have to send in a report to BNM, whenever a cash transaction exceeds RM25,000, in a bid to prevent money laundering and terrorism financing.

Since the new boudaries seem to be working so well, Bank Negara is now considering introducing a cash transaction limit for individuals and companies, but it will consult the public first.

Landslide leaves 200 stranded in Genting Highlands

Clean up on a road leading to two hotels in Genting Highlands continued into the wee hours of this morning, following a landslide yesterday.

Authorities say around 200 people were stranded by the landslide, but no injuries were reported.
