More affordable child car seats on the way

The government is looking at ways to help those from the lower income group get affordable child car seats.

Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Hannah Yeoh says they're seeking input and assistance from manufacturers and sellers - adding that recycling old seats is also another option being considered.

Starting next year...it will be compulsory for all small kids inside private vehicles to be placed in child seats.

Students to learn about statutory rape

Students will soon learn about statutory rape and issues like child grooming and sexual harrasment.

Deputy Education Minister Teo Nie Ching says the topic will be included in the school syllabus for Year Six and Form Five students beginning in 2021.

She explained that there's a need for such topics to be taught to students given the increasing number of rape cases involving minors.

Decision soon on compulsory vaccination

A decision on compulsory child vaccinations will be made soon by the government. 

The Health Ministry says a study on the proposal is close to being completed...and will be discussed before being brought up to the Cabinet.

Unlike some other countries, it is currently not compulsory for Malaysian kids to be vaccinatd before they are admitted into school.

Iman dies

The Sumatran rhino is now extinct in Malaysia, after Iman - the last known living member of the spieces in the country, died of cancer in Sabah.

Our last male Sumatran rhino died back in May.

The species is highly endangered, with only around 80 of them left on the entire planet - mostly living in the wild in Sumatra.
