Children Dept still a ways off

Dec 15, 2019

It will take at least two years to set up the govt's proposed Children's Dept.

The Women, Family and Community Development Deputy Minister says it's because a number of issues need to be looked into first, including the necessary legal changes.

The ministry proposed setting up the Children's Dept, to look after their welfare and tackle the country's high death rate of minors.

Children's issues currently fall under the jurisdiction of the Welfare Department, which is also responsible for the welfare of the disabled and senior citizens.

The Transport Ministry has reminded that authorities will only start fully enforcing the requirement to have child safety seat in vehicles, six months after the rulling officially comes into effect on Jan 1st.

Its minister says the govt wants to raise awareness and educate the public on the benefits of the seat first, before taking punitive action.
