MCO extended till May 12th

The Movement Control Order has been extended by another two weeks.The fourth phase of the MCO will be in force until May 12th.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is also not ruling out the possibility of another extension, although this will depend on data from the Health Ministry.

"Brothers and sisters, this means that you may not be able to celebrate Hari Raya in your hometowns. You still won't be able to work, except for those working in the approved industries. Businesses are still not allowed to operate. But if the number of COVID-19 cases continues to drop, the government could ease restrictions in stages in a few sectors, including social sectors."

Meanwhile, Tan Sri Muhyiddin says the government is working on a plan to revive the economy in phases, over the medium and long term.

This includes re-opening certain sectors, subject to strict requirements.

Ongoing travel ban may continue to be enforced, even after MCO is lifted

Health Director General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says current border controls have been effective in stopping imported Covid-19 cases and should be continued: 

“Lifting the MCO, doesn’t mean we’re going to lift border control. In fact, we need to strengthen border control, as we see there are more than 180 countries that are involved with positive cases. When we ease the MCO, we need to look into local transmission as well. I mentioned earlier we have six indicators, and we need to compile all six indicators before we can advise the PM accordingly, to make a decision whether there will be a ‘baby-step’ exit strategy. We have to do it slowly, but surely. We cannot lift it totally.” 

This came as the Prime Minister announced last night, that the Movement Control Order will be extended for a fourth phase that will end on May 12th. 

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says our sacrifice over the first three phases of the MCO has helped reduce the number of Covid-19 cases, but we need to continue, if we are to effectively break the chain of infection.

This, as Malaysia reported 71 new coronavirus cases yesterday, the seventh straight day that we’ve reported fewer than a hundred new infections.

PH wants longer Parliament sitting next month

Pakatan Harapan will send a representative to meet the Dewan Rakyat speaker to seek an extension to the one-day parliamentary sitting on May 18th.

PH is asking for at least two additional days, to enable in-depth debate and discussions regarding the government’s efforts to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.
